Karel Růžička (1940 – September 26, 2016) ranks among the greatest Czech jazz musicians. He has toured all over the world with his brilliant Celebration Jazz Mass. It is jazz but also a spiritual piece, referring to the basis of all jazz, gospel music. Růžička originally composed the Mass for string quartet, jazz band, soprano solo and choir. However, since the premiere in 1991 he has had a dream to dress the piece in an orchestral robe. And so FOK has invited him to make his dream a reality. The premiere of the orchestral version could not go on without the phenomenal saxophonist, Karel Růžička Jr. – a Czech in New York, like an American in Paris.
