We are inviting you to Divadlo Na Prádle, a theatre at the heart of Prague’s Malá Strana, which are dedicating next week to John Gay’s possibly most successful piece, A Beggar’s Opera.
A Beggar’s Opera
Divadlo Miloco and Prague Shakespeare Company present A Beggar’s Opera, an original, modern(ish!) adaptation of John Gay’s 18th-century bawdy musical satire featuring a cast of thieves, prostitutes and lowlifes. With music composed by the Olivier Award-winning, Grammy-nominated Tiger Lillies and their “anarchic Brechtian street opera” style, an international ensemble of actors and musicians present a dark, brutal and comic retelling of Gay’s enduring tale.
Directed by: Daniel Brown
Original Music: The Tiger Lillies and Divadlo Miloco
Musical Direction: Valeria Vasil’ova, Elina Palovaara
Set and Costume Design: Youliana Voykova
Dramaturgy: Colm McCarthy, Daniel Brown and the ensemble
Cast: Jiri Cevela, Marc Cram, Elina Palovaara, Michael Pittham, Lindsay Taylor, Jeff Smith, Valeria Vasil’ova, Elissa Levitt
“Through the whole Piece, you may observe such a Similitude of Manners in high and low Life, that it is difficult to determine whether (in the fashionable Vices) the fine Gentlemen imitate the Gentlemen of the Road, or the Gentlemen of the Road the fine Gentlemen.—Had the Play remained, as I at first intended, it would have carried a most excellent Moral. ’Twould have shewn that the lower Sort of People have their Vices in a degree as well as the Rich: And that they are punish’d for them.” – John Gay, 1728
